Hardscaping, Carpentry and Design in Burlington

Blacksmoke Contracting builds hardscaping, timber work and full exterior renovations for homeowners across Burlington, from Aldershot and Roseland in the south to Tyandaga, Brant Hills, Millcroft and Alton Village further north.

Burlington yards range from flat lakeside lots to properties that climb toward the Niagara Escarpment, and the work changes with them. We plan each job around the grade first, then the materials.

Services in Burlington

Three trades, one crew in Burlington.

Hardscaping and retaining walls in Burlington

North of the QEW, sloped backyards often need stepped patios, natural stone stairs or a retaining wall to create flat, usable space. In older south Burlington neighbourhoods the request is more often replacing a cracked concrete walk or entrance with interlock or stone.

Carpentry in Burlington

Privacy screens and fence replacements along shared lines are common in established neighbourhoods, and on sloped lots fences and decks have to step with the grade rather than fight it.

Landscape design in Burlington

Many Burlington designs start with a slope. We plan the levels, walls and drainage so the yard works with the escarpment grade, then choose materials that match the house.

Our work

What we build around Burlington.

Burlington's housing runs from postwar bungalows near the lake to 1970s and 1980s neighbourhoods in the centre of the city and newer subdivisions in the north. The older lots usually need entrances, walkways and patios rebuilt on a proper base. The newer ones more often need a builder-grade yard finished: a patio, a privacy screen, planting beds and lighting.

Building in Burlington: what to know.

The Niagara Escarpment runs across north Burlington, and creeks drain from it to the lake through many neighbourhoods. Land near those creeks and valleys can be regulated by Conservation Halton, and rural north Burlington includes Niagara Escarpment Commission development control areas, so some grading and building work needs approval first.

Burlington's Private Tree By-law also covers trees on private land in the city's urban area, so removing or injuring a protected tree can need a permit. We plan excavation around root zones and check before we dig near one.

What moves the number on a Burlington quote.

Burlington quotes are itemised after a site walk. On sloped lots the biggest factor is usually the structure needed to deal with the grade: walls, steps and drainage. In established neighbourhoods it is often access through a narrow side yard and removing the old concrete before the new work goes in. Material choice, from standard pavers to natural stone, moves the number from there.

FAQ

Questions from Burlington homeowners.

How much does an interlock cost in Ontario?

It depends on the area, how deep the base needs to be, the paver you choose, access for equipment and how many cuts, steps and borders are involved. We look at the property and give you one itemised price instead of a per-square-foot guess.

What is the average cost of an interlock driveway in Ontario?

Driveways cost more per square foot than patios because they need a deeper base to carry vehicles year round, and they often involve removing old asphalt or concrete first. The final number depends on size, base depth, paver choice and borders, so we quote each driveway after measuring it.

Is interlocking cheaper than concrete?

Usually not up front: plain poured concrete tends to cost less to install. Interlock holds up better over time because single pavers can be replaced, and the surface moves with freeze and thaw instead of cracking.
