Hardscaping, Carpentry and Design in Halton Hills

Blacksmoke Contracting is based in Halton Hills, and most of our work happens within a short drive of home. We build interlock patios, walkways and driveways, natural stone steps, armour stone retaining walls, fences, pavilions and decks for homeowners in Georgetown, Acton, Glen Williams, Limehouse, Norval and the rural properties in between.

Owner Blake Cole runs every Halton Hills job himself, from the first site walk to the final sweep, so the person who quotes your project is the person who builds it.

Services in Halton Hills

Three trades, one crew in Halton Hills.

Hardscaping and retaining walls in Halton Hills

Georgetown's established streets tend to need new front walks, entrances and replacements for tired concrete, while the bigger rural and escarpment lots around Glen Williams and Limehouse call for armour stone walls and terraced patios that turn a slope into usable space.

Carpentry in Halton Hills

Long property lines, open exposure and uneven ground make fences, privacy screens and pavilions some of the most common timber requests here. Posts are set below frost depth and braced for wind on open lots.

Landscape design in Halton Hills

On sloped or valley properties the design starts with grade and drainage. We plan the levels, the walls and where water will go before a single paver is chosen.

Our work

What we build around Halton Hills.

Halton Hills mixes older brick homes in downtown Georgetown and Acton, newer subdivisions on the edges of town, and acreage properties along the escarpment. The projects follow the housing stock: front entrances, interlock walkways and driveway borders on in-town lots, and stone walls, larger patios and long fence runs on the rural properties.

The photos below are recent Blacksmoke projects of the kind we build across the town.

Building in Halton Hills: what to know.

Much of Halton Hills sits on or below the Niagara Escarpment, and the Credit River and its tributaries run through Georgetown, Glen Williams and Norval. Properties near a watercourse or valley can fall inside an area regulated by Credit Valley Conservation or Conservation Halton, and parts of the escarpment fall under the Niagara Escarpment Commission's development control. Either can mean a permit before grading or building, so we check the property before digging starts.

Soils across the town are often heavy clay that holds water. That is why the base under a patio or walkway is dug out, replaced with compacted crushed stone and sloped away from the house, and why retaining walls here get drainage stone and pipe behind them.

Pricing

What moves the number on a Halton Hills quote.

Every Halton Hills quote is itemised after a site walk. On rural lots, access for equipment and the distance material has to travel across the property can change the number as much as the square footage. On in-town lots, narrow side yards and removing old concrete are the usual factors. Grade changes, steps, walls and drainage work add structure and labour wherever they are needed.

Reviews

What our clients say.

“We had waited a long time to change our front yard. Last summer it was our front porch, but the yard was still lacking curb appeal. Blake and his team produced outstanding work, throughout the entire process. Does not matter the size of the project, it is treated with the same respect and attention to detail as a larger one! We highly recommend Blacksmoke Contracting for excellent results!”

FAQ

Questions from Halton Hills homeowners.

Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Ontario?

It depends on height and location. Under the Ontario Building Code, a retaining wall more than 1 metre high next to public property, a building entrance or an area the public uses generally needs a building permit and an engineered design. In Halton Hills, walls near the Credit River valleys or on the escarpment can also need conservation authority or Niagara Escarpment Commission approval. We confirm what applies before we build.

Is interlock cheaper than concrete?

Plain poured concrete usually costs less to install. Interlock costs more up front but individual pavers can be lifted and reset if the ground settles, which matters on Halton Hills clay, and the surface flexes with frost instead of cracking across the slab.

What is the average cost of landscaping services in Ontario?

There is no useful average, because the size of the project, the materials, the site access and the amount of excavation vary so much. We would rather walk your property and give you one itemised price than quote a number that does not fit your yard.
